Common Computer Related Injuries

Ergonomics is an interdisciplinary study regarding the inter-relationship between individuals, thier work environment, equipment used to perform work tasks and other factors that affect thier performance, health and safety.

Ergoport is an organisation that specialises in computer related ergonomics and just as computers have changed the way we work, it is becoming increasingly necessary for us to change the way we operate them. There are major concerns over the proper and safe use of computer equipment in order to prevent injury. Safe computer use including posture, typing and mousing methods and work station set-up will help prevent muscular-skeletal problems.

The major causes of computer overuse Syndromes strains are:

  • Poor body alignment
  • Prolonged positions
  • Repetitive movements
  • Poor work station design
  • Overuse of muscles

Work performed on computers typically requires you to hold still for considerable periods of time involving small, frequent, repetitive movements of the eyes, head, arms and fingers. Retaining a fixed posture over long periods of time requires a significant static holding force (static exertion) by the muscles causing fatigue.

Proper work station design and set-up is very important in relation to eliminating the cause of repetitive strain disorders.

Some major factors attributed to correct ergonomics include:

  • Screen at eye level
  • Posture support (back, arms, legs and feet)
  • Adjustable chair height and lumbar support with a high back to keep torso and head vertical
  • Correct keyboard position
  • Document holders to allow the worker to position and view material without straining the eyes, neck, shoulder and back muscles
  • Relaxation of the neck and shoulder muscles
  • Elbows at an angle of 90 to 100 degrees
  • Wrists in neutral position
  • Anti-glare lighting and screens
  • Correct keybaord and mouse position

Ergoport personal Health survey

Ergonomics is aimed at catering for the uniqueness of every individual and their work demands. Having the correct workstation equipment is essential in helping avoid computer overuse Syndromes. The function of a professional ergonomic consultant is to observe an individual at his or her workstation and make specific recommendations as to what equipment needs and/ or adjustments are required.

Goto Personal Health Survey to fill out a personal survey. Fill out this survey only if you would like one of our professional ergonomic or rehabilitation specialists to assist you in treating and/or preventing any pain or discomfort you are experiencing at work. We work with ergonomic consultants internationally and will be happy to recommend someone in your area. This confidential information is saved onto a secure server and will be given to an ergonomic specialist in your area who will then contact you.
